Formal Assessment 30%
Formal assessments include standardized measures that are often administered to an entire class, grade level, or group of students. The same assessment is administered to all students at the same time to get a picture of each student’s performance in comparison to other students.
In formal evaluation, the rules of engagement are the same. This means the teacher uses the same assessment method for every student—they respond to the same questions within the same time frame, and a fixed grading criterion determines their results. Examples of Formal Assessments
TestsA test is a standardized evaluation that measures a student’s skill or knowledge using a standard grading scale.
QuizzesQuizzes Like tests, quizzes use a standard evaluation criterion to score a student’s knowledge. However, a major difference is that quizzes have fewer questions, and use a quick-fire approach. For example, students may be asked to respond to 10 multi-choice questions in one minute.
Informal Assessment 55%
Informal assessments are more casual, observation-based tools used during class work and homework returned. These assessments allow teachers to get a feel for student progress and identify areas in which they might need more instruction. Informal assessments can help teachers pinpoint students’ strengths and weaknesses and guide planning for upcoming lessons. Since the students spend most of their time acquiring knowledge through out the lesson and class work activities, the school has made it part of the informal assessment.
Examples of Informal Assessments
Classwork Classwork is an observational assessment from which both activities and learned and practiced. During this time, the teacher makes observations on how the material given is used correctly to further understand the given tasks.
Homework The main purpose of homework is to acertain how much of the day's material has been retained, remembered or researched. The homework activity should be a family activity as learning does not end when the class time is over, but instead is it further enhanced by the involvement of the family structure.
Effort Assessment 15%
Effort assessments like informal is casual, it is the holistic determination of how capable is the student able to do the assigned work measured against how much work has been actually done.
